An Abuse of Power.

And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house. (2 Sam 11:4)

Did King David Commit Adultery?

In this study, we want to look at the subject of an abuse of power. Scripture says that there is nothing new under the sun. (Ecc 1:9) Some things that we see happening with our political and religious leaders concerning moral issues are not new. They have always been around in some form or another. As we examine 2 Samuel 11, we run into a classic abuse of power concerning King David.

At first glance, many have concluded that David fell into adultery with Bathseba, but this is not true. Upon reading the text in 2 Samuel 11, we see some interesting items to add light to this matter—

1- 2 Samuel 11:4—Verse four says that He sent messengers to get Bathseba. To get some insights on this matter, David was not supposed to have been on the rooftop. He most likely was bored and distracted. It was during this distraction that he saw Bathseba washing herself.

David was supposed to have been in battle with the Kings. (2 Samuel 11:1) Perhaps he got too comfortable and slacked off. The enemy put the lovely Bathseba in his sights and he started to lust after her. The word says that she did not seduce him. In fact, when he sent the messengers to get her, she had no idea what it was all about. Let’s face it-King David was a peeping Tom and Bathseba had no idea he was checking her out while she was bathing.

2-In 2 Samuel 11:4, we see that word took her. It comes from the Hebrew word “Laqach”, which means seize and snatch away. We see an example of this with Dinah. (Gen 34:2). David had committed the sin of rape. He used his power to intimate Bathseba into submission.

3-When Nathan comforted King David, if he did indeed commit adultery, he would have mentioned Bathseba’s name. The fact that he said that David (alone) would not die was a strong indicator that he was guilty of rape. In the Old Testament, rape was punishable by death. ( Deut 22:25)

4- Your life is a garden. What you sow, so will you reap. David committed an act of rape and in return his daughter was raped by her brother. ( 2 Sam 13:1-14)

Conclusion

This is not a heaven or hell subject. You are free to disagree with me if you want to, but the fact of the matter is that if you were a victim of sexual abuse, there is healing. I, myself, was sexually abused and it took me years to forgive that individual. Mostly, because I had forgotten about it.

You may forget, but time does not heal the wounds. The hurts are there and what time does is cover it up. I experienced this myself when years later, the Lord brought this incident to my attention. As I remembered this, I honestly felt like getting even with this individual.

The Holy Spirit showed me that I had to let it go and forgive. As I agree to do this, the inner healing started. Perhaps, you have been abused by a person in authority–i.e Uncle, Father or Boss, etc. God can give you the grace to forgive. Let’s pray–

Father, I come to you because I have been hurt emotionally. I want to get healed of the past. I forgive that person who has sexually abused me. By faith, I let it go. Dear Lord, your word says that you have come to heal the brokenhearted. Heal my broken heart in Jesus name. Amen.

God bless you and remember–You have the mind of Christ!
